Various beauty ideals

When you meet a person for the first time your brain decides within a thirtieths fraction of a second if you find them beautiful. It is not something you think about. This way appearance becomes something completely fundamental you unconsciously attribute value every day.

Scientific research shows we are able to put objective beauty into words: Such as symmetry, average sized nose and ears, light skin and blond hair. This is according to scientific research both historically and across countries and cultures.

It can be said we like the safe choice - symmetry, because our brain dislikes when something sticks out. And we like youth. This way beauty is deeply rooted in us, because we pretty much agree on what it is.

Despite the fundamental agreement there is two dominating movements within beauty ideals among the youth of Denmark. Simply put they can be described as “The Perfect Ideal” and “The Natural Ideal”.

The latter is a direct response to the culture of perfection which has been dominating for many years, experts agree on.

In this project we follow Josefine, Ines, Thea and Marcus, who cultivates their beauty in various ways.
