Beneath half a meter of soil

In Moldova waste sanitation is not a top priority. Enormous landfills which are regularly covered with soil is a common sight in the Moldovan landscape. The consequences are fires that will go on for months, air pollution and health issues for the locals.

These landfills can be found all across Moldova, often within 100 meters of the villages. The landfills have occurred as a result of only a minimal percentage of the rural areas of Moldova having an official system for garbage collection. Numbers from 2016 show that only 3 percent of the rural areas have this. That is equivalent to only 27 of Moldova’s 916 municipalities having a garbage collecting system.
